Extreme Fundraising

Extreme fundraising is often found in sports where athletes take on vast distances for charity. Numerous examples can be found in Canada alone. Take a look below to learn more about some of the extreme fundraising initiatives Canadians are taking on and feel free to share more example with us!

  • The ultimate feat for mountain climbers is to conquer the 7 Summits –the tallest peaks of the seven continents. In 2008, Rocco Rossi and the Heart and Stroke Foundation created a 7 Summits Challenge, which required participants to climb the stairs of each of the 7 tallest buildings in Toronto in one day. Rocco, on the other hand, took this challenge one step further by climbing the 7 towers several times over a course of a weekend so that his climb was equivalent to Mount Everest (a total height of 29,028 feet). This event raised $1.1 million for lifesaving AEDs.
  • On April 12, 1980, Terry Fox began his Marathon of Hope across Canada raising money and awareness for Cancer patients. Although Fox was unable to complete the run, the Terry Fox Run still continues to raise millions of dollars each year.
  • Beginning in 1985, Rick Hansen, a Canadian paraplegic athlete wheeled around the world raising $26 million for spinal cord injury research and still runs the Rick Hansen Foundation which has raised over $200 million.
  • Benjamin Jordan is currently paragliding across Canada to raise money for kids so that they can attend summer camp.
