FUNDRAISING IDEAS
FUNDRAISING WITH FUN!
Fundraising can be a great way to join together with family, friends, and your community for a worthy cause. Not only do you get to have fun with those closest to you, but you get to do it all while supporting others in need. Take a look at some of the following fundraising ideas; then grab a group of family, friends, neighbours, and colleagues to organize an event in support of the project of your choice!
Fundraising Ideas for:
|
-
Dinner Party
If you like to entertain, this is an idea that fits in nicely with your regular routine. Cook a meal, invite friends and family to join you for a certain price per plate, and just enjoy each other’s company. Amongst friends and family, try to decide what you believe is the most important Millennium Development Goal. If you would like, you can contribute the evening’s donations to that specific IDRF project.
- Sports Night
Are you a sports fan? When is the next big game coming up? Instead of a pub night, invite your friends, family and colleagues over to watch the game. Let everyone know what project the sports night will benefit and encourage everyone to participate. You can even ask guests to make a donation as a cover charge and to make donations for snacks, drinks, and of course wings!
- Barbeque
Who doesn’t enjoy attending a barbeque on a gorgeous summer day? Invite your family and friends to spend the day outdoors. You can have the BBQ event in your own backyard or even at a public park where kids can play at the play ground and you can hold an additional soccer game for charity. If you have a large group, you could add an element of fun by having a raffle as well. It’s fun for kids and adults!
- Cottage Get Away
Are you a proud owner of a cottage? Why not invite family and friends up for a charity weekend? Create a vacation package where guests have to pay for their rooms, food, and the use of boats, sea-doos, and so forth. Emphasize the fact that all the money raised will go toward the cause of your choice.
- Garage Sale
We all have things in storage that we will likely never use again. Why not sell them to people who will? Having a garage sale is a great way to get rid of some clutter around the house and raise funds for those less fortunate at the same time. To raise even more funds, get your neighbours together for a street sale!
- Penny Jar
Grab a jar or donation can and place it in an accessible place in your home. Make a sign or label such as “Charity Fund! All proceeds go towards…” Everyday get your family members to drop their excess change into the container. Also, be sure to get family and friends to contribute when they stop by. At the end of the month, count the change and send a cheque or money order to IDRF to support the project of your choice. As an added bonus, you can turn this collection into a competition by trying to beat the amount raised in the previous month.

FUNDRAISING IDEAS FOR SCHOOLS, OFFICES AND COMMUNITY GROUPS
- Pot Luck Lunch or Dinner
Who doesn’t like home cooked meals? Get your family, friends, coworkers, or neighbours to each cook a dish and bring it to your house or office for a group lunch or dinner. Ask everyone to make a donation to help others in need.
- Street Sale
Get your neighbours together for a street sale. Street sales often attract a lot of crowds and it’s a great way to raise money as a group. In addition, street sales help recycle items that you and your neighbours no longer use. Make sure to let everyone know about the cause so even if someone doesn’t want to purchase anything, he or she can still make a donation toward a great cause.
- Penny Jar
Place a penny jar or donation can in your classroom or office and get students and coworkers to contribute to the cause by dropping off their loose change. You can also get classrooms or departments to compete for a group lunch. Set a points system for each coin or dollar bill donated. For example, a penny is worth 1 point, a quarter is worth 50 points, a dollar is worth 150 points and so forth. The winning team at the end of the month can win a complimentary lunch or breakfast.
- Office Continental Breakfast
Once or twice a month, get one or two co-workers to fund a continental breakfast. Bring in donuts, muffins, bagels and croissants, and set some coffee to brew. As a group, choose a project you all want the funds to go and agree to make a donation before helping yourselves to a treat.
- M&M Count
Fill up a jar with M&Ms for your class or office. Get everyone to make a dollar donation to guess the amount of M&Ms in the jar. At the end of the month, the winner can receive a prize or can win the jar of M&Ms. For an added bonus, get a local business to support your cause and to donate a prize for the winner. Then open the jar of M&Ms for everyone in your class or office to munch on.
- Balloon Pop
At a school or community event, set up a Balloon Pop for kids to participate in. In each balloon place a small piece of paper. Some pieces of paper will be blank while others will contain a number correlating to a prize. For a minimum dollar donation, kids can shoot 3 darts at the balloons.
- 24 Hour Famine
At your local school or community centre plan a 24 Hour Famine event for your school or community. Make sure to arrange plenty of activities for participants, choose videos to rent, and showcase the project you are raising money for every hour or two. Get every participant to collect pledges for their efforts to raise money for an IDRF project.
- Sporting Event
Choose your favourite sport and hold a sporting event for charity. Encourage players to make a donation if they want to play and ask your audience to make a donation in order to watch the event. Encourage everyone to support the cause in order to raise more funds. As an added bonus, you can get a family or friends to sell ice cream, popsicles, or freezies to audience during the game.
- Weekend Yard Services
Get together with a few friends over a weekend to offer your neighbours some yard services. Distribute a flyer a week before you plan to offer your services and let your neighbours known the project you are raising funds for. Encourage your neighbours to call you to sign-up for the event so you have a list of houses you know you can count on.
- Dress-Up or Goofy Hair Day
Pick a day that everyone in your class, community centre, or summer camp dresses up as something else, like on Halloween, or takes part in a goofy hair day. Have anyone who participates make a donation. You could even pick a theme, like super heroes or cartoon characters!

FUNDRAISING IDEAS FOR KIDS & TEENS
- Recycle Bottles
Let friends, family, local restaurants, and neighbours know that you are raising money for IDRF. Figure out a time and date that you can come by with friends or family to pick up empty bottles. Check out www.bagitback.ca to find out all the different bottles you can return for money. Not only will you be helping the environment by recycling, but you’ll be raising money for people who need help. As an added bonus, contact local restaurants and ask them to participate in the collection.
- BIG Business!
Get a few friends together for the summer and decide on some sort of service that you think people might need. Popular summer services include mowing lawns or walking dogs. Every time you make money, put aside a tiny bit that you would like to donate to an IDRF project. You get to decide how much money you want to donate; it can be $1 donated for every $10 you make, or even 10 cents for every $10 you make. No matter what, it will add up and IDRF will be very pleased with any money you are willing to donate! With this plan, not only are you raising money for charity, but you’re making money too! Congratulations, you’ve started your own BIG Business!
- Refreshment Stand
Do you live on a street where lots of kids play? Why not set up a refreshment stand on a hot summer day? Grab a cooler with freezies and popsicles and make some fresh lemonade. Encourage your neighbours to make a donation to your cause in order to receive a treat.
- Bake Sale
Everyone has a sweet tooth for treats! Bake some cookies, cakes, and other snacks. Then set up a stand at your school, soccer game, community centre, or on your street, and sell them to your family, friends, neighbours and team mates!
- Sports Event
Are you a sports fan? Why not organize a game of your favourite sport with your friends and family and ask them to give money to charity to play! Or why not speak to your coach about holding a charity game with your existing sports team? You can even sell cool treats like popsicles and freezies at the event to raise more funds.
- Charity Car Wash
Get some of your friends and family together, gather soap, sponges and lots of water, and spend the day washing cars for your neighbours. Hand out a flyer the week before announcing the cause you are raising funds for and encourage your neighbours to stop by for a car wash to support your cause. Don’t forget to make a sign (“Charity Car Wash!!) in order to attract more support. What a great way to spend a summer day!
- Garage Sale
Do you have old toys, books or games that you don’t use anymore? Have a garage sale and see how much money you can raise for charity with your old things. Encourage everyone to make an additional donation to the program!
- Host a Party or Sleepover
Parties and sleepovers are always so much fun! Have a party and ask the people who come to bring a donation for charity. This is a great idea if you have a birthday coming up!
- Fill Up Your Piggy Bank
Do you have an empty piggy bank at home? Make your piggy bank your new travel companion; make sure to bring it every where you go. When you are out encourage your family, friends, neighbours, and community members to make a donation to your cause. When your piggy bank is full, get your mom or dad to help you count the change and send a cheque to IDRF to benefit a project of your choice.
- Freezie Day
Freezies are a great way to cool down when it’s hot outside. Bring freezies to a sporting event, class, or summer camp, and sell them to your friends. Be sure to speak to your teacher or camper leader before you arrange a freezie day and tell your friends in advance so they can bring money!
