RISE-UP! To End Poverty
RISE-UP To End Poverty is a nation-wide online fundraising campaign run by the International Development and Relief Foundation (IDRF). The campaign aims to raise awareness about global poverty as well as to raise funds for 8 IDRF projects. The campaign is aligned with the United Nations’ Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), which like IDRF, seek to reduce extreme hunger and poverty, child mortality rates, disease epidemics such as HIV/AIDS, and aim to promote universal primary education, gender equality, environmental sustainability, and a global partnership for development.
Between July 17 and Oct 17, 2009, individuals can participate in the campaign by registering online at www.rise-up.ca. Registration is free and allows users to create their very own easy-to-use fundraising webpage. By signing up, individuals can set a fundraising goal and can specify which of the 8 IDRF projects they would like to fundraise for. Each IDRF project has been correlated with an MDG, to show how IDRF through its own efforts and through the efforts of its donors and supporters is striving to meet the goals the United Nations has set out in the year 2000.
In addition, through the RISE-UP! website users can email family and friends for support and can further engage in a critical discussion with other users through the use of the website’ community blog and through the use of other social networking tools. The website also offers users additional resources they can use to educate themselves about the UN’s MDG and other humanitarian issues.
Overall, the campaign not only aims to raise awareness and funds for 8 worthy causes, but it also encourages users to take action in their local communities. Fundraising and community events can bring people together, and it can provide them with a setting for critical discussions to take place. In the get involved section, you can learn about numerous ways you can get involved in your community and with IDRF. We encourage you to make use of this website and to get in touch with us if you need assistance.
